Before you go to Madagascar
Passports
You need a passport valid for at least six months beyond the date you intend to leave Madagascar, with at least two blank pages.
Visa
Most nationalities (EU, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand) can buy a tourist visa on arrival at Antananarivo (Ivato) airport. As of 2026 it costs €35 for stays up to 30 days, payable in cash (euros). We send you the latest guidance with your travel pack two months before departure.
Vaccinations & malaria
Madagascar is a malaria zone — we strongly recommend prophylaxis. Yellow fever is required only if you arrive from a yellow-fever country. Speak to a travel-medicine specialist 6–8 weeks before departure for the current advice on hepatitis A, typhoid and rabies.
Money
The currency is the Malagasy Ariary (MGA). ATMs are reliable in Antananarivo and most regional centres but rare in remote areas. Bring euros for the visa and as a back-up; US dollars are accepted in some lodges. Credit cards work in upmarket hotels and restaurants in cities.
Climate & what to pack
Madagascar has two seasons: dry (April–October) and wet (November–March). The highlands (Tana, Antsirabe) are cool — pack a fleece. The coast and the south are hot year-round. Light hiking shoes, sun protection, insect repellent, a head-torch and rain layers will cover you on most trips.
Plugs & connectivity
Power is 220V on European-style two-pin plugs (Type C/E). Mobile data via Orange or Telma is good in towns, patchy in parks, and absent in deep wilderness. We use WhatsApp for our emergency support line.
Tipping
Tipping isn't mandatory but is appreciated. Indicative: €10–15 per group per day for naturalist guides, €5 per group per day for drivers, small change in restaurants.
